Uplift and Seismicity Driven by Magmatic Inflation at Sierra Negra Volcano, Galápagos Islands

چکیده

Although episodes of surface uplift and elevated seismicity precede many volcanic eruptions, their temporal evolution is often complex, apparently in contradiction to simple trends predicted by mechanical deformation models. Here, we use continuous global positioning system seismic data recorded at Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos Islands, show how the edifice responded stress changes driven magma accumulation a shallow sill. The rate varied during 13 years 6.5 m inflation before 2018 eruption. number earthquakes per unit increased exponentially with total as differential increased. Accordingly, time function both rate. Gutenberg-Richter b-value decreased uplift. In final six months eruption, sequence large (M > 4) regulated state on fault, each being followed 2–3 days postseismic quiescence, retarding increase These did not affect overall Subsidence 8.5 accompanied 2-month On resumption uplift, was very low, high, reflecting relaxed fault system. observations that crustal becomes increasingly brittle higher states, supports theoretical models based elastic-brittle mechanics. They suggest joint interpretation key for forecasting future eruptions similar settings.

Constraints on Magma Chamber Geometry at Sierra Negra Volcano, Galápagos Islands, based on InSAR Observations

We investigate the problem of estimating magma chamber geometry using InSAR observations of Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos. Ascending and descending interferograms are combined to determine vertical and one horizontal component of displacement. The ratio of maximum horizontal to vertical displacement suggests a sill-like source. Spherical or stock-like bodies are inconsistent with the data. We...

Magmatic inflation at a dormant stratovolcano: 1996–1998 activity at Mount Peulik volcano, Alaska, revealed by satellite radar interferometry

[1] A series of ERS radar interferograms that collectively span the time interval from July 1992 to August 2000 reveal that a presumed magma body located 6.6 ± 0.5 km beneath the southwest flank of the Mount Peulik volcano inflated 0.051 ± 0.005 km between October 1996 and September 1998. Peulik has been active only twice during historical time, in 1814 and 1852, and the volcano was otherwise q...

The April-May 2006 volcano-tectonic events at Stromboli volcano (Southern Italy) and their relation with the magmatic system

Between April 10th and May 22th 2006, a small seismic swarm of 5 volcano-tectonic events occurred on the volcanic island of Stromboli (Southern Italy). Two of these, having M > 3 and an intensity of about V-VI MCS, were clearly felt causing concern in the population. They were recorded during a period of increased explosive activity and were followed by two major explosions at the summit crater...

Hematology, serum chemistry, and serology of Galápagos penguins (Spheniscus mendiculus) in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador.

The Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is an endangered species endemic to the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. In 2003 and 2004, 195 penguins from 13 colonies on the islands of Isabela and Fernandina in the Galápagos archipelago were examined. Genetic sexing of 157 penguins revealed 62 females and 95 males. Hematology consisted of packed cell volume (n = 134), white blood cell differentials ...
